Understanding infectious diseases to better control them
The CIRI (Centre International de Recherche en Infectiologie) brings together the scientific and medical research communities in infectious diseases and immunity in the Lyon-St Etienne area, with the University of Lyon 1, Inserm, CNRS and ENS de Lyon as main managing bodies, and Hospices Civils de Lyon and Université Jean Monnet as secondary managing bodies, and important partnerships with VetAgroSup and Institut Pasteur. More than 400 researchers with complementary disciplinary backgrounds are grouped into 3 main specialties: immunologists, bacteriologists and virologists, some of them being as well as cancerologists and epidemiologists. They work together with the main objective of understanding the biology of microbes and the immune system, and the interactions between microbes and their hosts, in order to better combat infectious diseases and other illnesses involving the immune system.

- In a new study published in the journal Autophagy, CIRI researchers have shown for the first time that, in patients with Crohn's disease, the expression of autophagic gene variants strongly affects autophagic dynamics, known as autophagic flux.

Impact of vaccination on induction of mucosal immunity with mRNA vaccines against Covid-19 epidemic.Teams from the Immunology Department of the Pitié-Salpêtrière AP-HP hospital, Inserm and Sorbonne University, coordinated by Prof. Guy Gorochov, have conducted a study on the ability of Covid-19 mRNA vaccines to induce a mucosal immune response. CIRI members took part in this study. The results were published in JAMA Network Open on April 23, 2024.
- Members of the CIRI contributed to two books that were recently published. One is about the history of microbiology, and the other tackles research progress linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.
