Summary: Coagulase-negative staphylococci including the endemic and multidrug-resistant S. capitis NRCS-A stand out as a major cause to late-onset sepsis in preterm neonates. Given that coagulase-negative staphylococci are frequently recovered from the feces of preterm neonates, we sought to investigate whether S. capitis could cross the intestinal mucosa and trigger sepsis. To address this question, we studied how S. capitis interact with enterocytes and microfold cells in vitro. Additionally, we developed a force-feeding in two-day-old mouse pups to assess the ability of S. capitis to translocate and induce sepsis. Finally, we developed an innovative procedure using digestive explant of a human newborn to study if S. capitis NRCS-A can invade the intestinal mucosa ex vivo.
