Prognostic factors of severe community-acquired staphylococcal pneumonia in France

Following a long lasting controversy between Europe and USA regarding the role of Panton Valentin leucocidin in staphylococcal pneumonia, our group conducted a protective cohort analysis in France that recruited 163 patients with severe community-acquired pneumonia. Thorough analysis of both clinical parameters and bacterial genetic data showed that Panton-Valentine leukocidin is associated with pleuropneumonia in toddlers and, in olders patients, with increased mortality independent of methicillin resistance and other virulence factors.
