Abstract: 

Dr. Mercedes Gomez de Agüero investigates body barrier tissue development and its impact on early-life barrier function. Using cutting-edge gnotobiotic models, she focuses on studying how environmental factors, such as microbial metabolites, shape fate decisions and lineage commitments of structural cells, including keratinocytes and fibroblasts, during fetal development, leading to functional consequences for neonatal barrier integrity. In parallel, the group of Mercedes also investigates the dynamics of the microbial colonisation of the tissue barriers in early life by studying a clinical cohort of preterm infants. They explore how skin colonisers are selected (host-microbial interactions) and controlled to mitigate the risk of infection (host-microbiota (including phages) -pathogen interactions).
